Automation Exit Conditions

Automation Exit Conditions

Exit conditions help you remove contacts from an automation when they meet criteria you define. This keeps contacts from continuing through steps that are no longer relevant, without adding multiple Evaluates to manage contacts throughout your flow.

How it works

Contacts in your automation are checked every minute to see if their data matches your Exit criteria. When a contact matches your exit criteria, they are removed from the automation, regardless of their current step.

You can combine conditions into groups to control who is removed:

  • All: The contact must match every condition within the group, or every group at the overall level.

  • Any: The contact only needs to match one condition within the group, or one group at the overall level.

Exit conditions also apply to contacts already in a live automation when you the criteria.

Set up an exit condition

  1. Open your automation and select Automation Settings.

  2. Under Actions, click Match Contacts.

  3. Choose whether contacts must match All or Any of the condition groups.

  4. Within each group, choose All or Any, then select a field and operator for each condition. Complete any values required by the selected operator.

  5. Use Add Condition or Add New Group to expand your criteria as needed.

  6. Click Ok to save.

View removed contacts

In Automation Settings, Contacts Removed shows how many contacts have been removed by the exit condition. The count displays 0 if no contacts have been removed.

Click the count to view the list of removed contacts. Each removal is also recorded in the contact’s activity feed.

Best practices and examples

Choose criteria that indicate a contact no longer needs to remain in the automation. For example, you could remove contacts when a field indicates they have completed a purchase, registered for an event, or become a customer.

Before saving, review the All and Any selections at both the group and overall levels. These settings determine how broadly your exit criteria apply. Remember that new criteria also affect contacts currently in the automation.

If you expect removed contacts to participate again later, review the automation’s Allow Re-entry setting.

FAQ

Does a new exit condition affect contacts already in a live automation?

Yes. Exit conditions check contacts currently in the automation, including those who entered before the criteria were added.

Can a removed contact re-enter the automation later?

Only if Allow Re-entry is set to Yes in Automation Settings. Enabling re-entry allows a contact to enter again; it does not automatically return them to the automation.

Can I use more than one exit condition?

Yes. You can add multiple conditions and condition groups, then use All or Any to define how they work together.

How often are contacts checked?

Contacts are checked every minute, so removal may not happen immediately after a contact meets the criteria.
