Creating Confirmation (Double Opt-In) Emails

Confirmation emails, also known as double opt-in messages, help ensure that new subscribers truly want to hear from you. These emails are automatically sent to contacts in a “unconfirmed” status and require them to take action before they’re added to your active mailing list.

How Confirmation Emails Work

Confirmation emails fall under the Automated Email category during campaign setup. These messages are designed to verify the intent of new contacts added to your database in an unconfirmed state.

Contacts typically enter the "unconfirmed" status through:

  • CSV Import: Selecting the action “Import as unconfirmed contacts, and send confirmation request.”

  • Subscribe Forms: Enabling the setting “Send one confirmation message” for the Sign-Up message.

These emails are sent automatically after the contact is added, and clicking the confirmation link within the message upgrades the contact’s status from “unconfirmed” to “normal”. Only contacts with a “normal” status can receive regular marketing emails.

Creating a Confirmation Email

The campaign creation process is the same as any other automated email:

  1. Go to the Setup tab and select Automated Email under Campaign Type.

  2. Choose Confirmed Opt-In as the automation type.

  3. Complete the usual campaign details, design, and testing steps.

The critical difference lies in your Call-to-Action (CTA). Every confirmation email must include a button or link with the special merge tag:
%%url.confirm%%

This tag is what triggers the system to update a contact's status when clicked.

Best Practices and Tips

  • Use clear, friendly language in your confirmation message. Let recipients know why they’re receiving it and what action to take.

  • Highlight the CTA button visually. Use contrasting colors and simple text like “Confirm My Subscription”.

  • Place the confirmation link early in the message to reduce friction.

  • Avoid adding other links that may distract from the primary confirmation goal.

Practical Use Cases

  • List growth via subscribe forms: Double opt-in helps maintain high-quality subscriber lists and ensures compliance with regulations like GDPR.

  • Event interest confirmations: Use this email type to verify interest before enrolling contacts in a series or campaign.

  • Contests or giveaways: Require confirmation to ensure valid participation and avoid fake entries.

Additional Notes

  • If a recipient does not click the confirmation link, their status will remain as “unconfirmed”, and they will be excluded from future email sends.

  • You can monitor confirmation status in your contact list filters and automation reports.
