How do I create a zip code radius segment?

How do I create a zip code radius segment?

If your marketing campaigns are location-sensitive, our segment builder lets you create targeted groups based on zip code proximity. This is especially useful for promoting local events, regional offers, or location-based services. The zip code radius clause evaluates postal codes stored on contact records to build dynamic, geography-aware segments.

How It Works

To use this feature, your contact records must have zip code data stored—either in the standard Zip field or a custom one. The segment builder allows you to set a base zip code, define a radius in miles or kilometers, and return contacts who fall within that geographic range.

Steps to Build a Zip Code Radius Segment

  1. Navigate to Segments

    • In your Contacts dashboard, click Segments on the left-hand navigation

    • Then click the Create Email Segment button in the top-right.

  2. Set Segment Type

    • Choose Regular segment (this is the default setting for new segments).

  3. Enter General Information

    • Name your segment.

    • Optionally, add a description and assign it to a folder for organization.

  4. Start Building the Clause

    • In the builder, open the Select field dropdown.

    • Scroll to the Groups section and choose Geography.

  5. Choose the Contact Zip Code Field

    • From the Contact Zip code field dropdown, select your zip code field.

    • If you're not using the standard Zip field, scroll to locate the correct custom field from your account.

  6. Set the Clause Operator

    • Open the Is dropdown to select the appropriate operator:

      • less than <

      • greater than >

      • less than or equal to <=

      • greater than or equal to >=

  7. Enter Radius and Base Zip

    • Input a numeric radius value and select the unit of measurement (miles or kilometers).

    • Enter the base zip code to serve as the center point for your radius evaluation.

  8. Save and Review

    • Click Save and Next.

    • Your segment is now stored in your segment library, and the on-screen preview will show matching contacts.

Best Practices and Tips

  • Use Accurate Data: For best results, ensure contact zip codes are consistently formatted and correctly stored.

  • Preview Often: Use the on-screen preview to confirm expected contacts are included.

  • Leverage for Local Campaigns: Great for regional promotions, event invites, or targeted outreach based on proximity.

Practical Use Cases

  • Promote an in-store event to contacts within a 25-mile radius of your location.

  • Send weather-related alerts or seasonal content to subscribers in specific geographic zones.

  • Target local services, such as delivery or real estate offerings, based on nearby zip codes.

Notes

  • This segmentation clause supports U.S. and Canadian postal codes.
