Alternatives to Image Maps in Email Design

As of January 31, 2022, image map functionality has been removed from all Delivra email editors. This decision was made to ensure a consistent and mobile-friendly email experience, as image maps are widely unsupported across email clients and devices.

Why We Don't Recommend Image Maps

  • Not mobile responsive: Image maps do not scale properly in mobile-friendly designs.

  • Poor client support: Outlook (desktop and mobile), Firefox, and Internet Explorer do not reliably support image maps.

  • Unpredictable rendering: Even when accepted, image maps often break alignment or become unclickable on smaller screens.

What to Do Instead

If you have a single image with multiple CTAs, you can achieve the same functionality without image maps by slicing the image and using individual links.

Step-by-Step: Replacing Image Maps with Image Slices

  1. Slice your large image into smaller parts using a graphic editor like Photoshop, Canva, or another third-party tool.

    • Each call-to-action should be its own separate image.

    • Avoid using Delivra's built-in image editor for slicing—it's best for basic tasks only.

  2. Optimize your images:

    • If the original image is over 100KB, slicing can help reduce load times.

    • Keep each slice aligned and consistent in dimensions, especially for side-by-side CTAs.

  3. Upload your image slices to Delivra:

    • Go to Assets > Media Library

    • Use the Upload button to add your new image files.

  4. Insert each image into its own cell within the drag-and-drop editor:

    • Use individual image blocks, not stacked images in a text block.

    • For side-by-side placement, use a non-responsive cell group to avoid stacking on mobile.

    • Avoid padding for alignment. Padding won’t scale on mobile and may break layout consistency.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If alignment looks off after upload, you may need to re-slice your images. A slight error or sliver of data in one slice can throw off positioning.

  • Do not try to fix alignment with padding—this might fix it on desktop, but will likely break the mobile view.

Summary

While image maps may have worked in some email environments in the past, modern email design requires mobile-first thinking. Using image slices in structured cells is the most reliable way to support multiple CTAs and maintain consistent layout across devices.
