Segmenting your SMS Contacts

Segments allow you to create dynamic lists of contacts. Using a clause builder to create criteria that evaluates your contacts, you can target your campaigns to the most relevant contacts to ensure the highest possible engagement. 

If you are using our SMS platform, you can build segments based on your SMS keyword(s), an additional piece of information collected through the opt-in process, click behavior, or data that was imported for your SMS contacts.

Where to build Segments

Get started by navigating to the Contacts dashboard. Select Segments from the left menu. Click the Create Segment button. Choose SMS for the Segment type, and then build your clauses. 

Below we've outlined the steps to create SMS segments.

Creating a segment based on SMS contact data

Our first example uses information imported for SMS contact records and a customized SMS field, Rewards Level. 



  1. Click the Create Segment button
  2. Segment Type: Choose SMS
  3. General Information: Provide a name for your segment & choose the SMS keyword
  4. Scroll to the Builder section, then open the New Clause drop-down
  5. Search or scroll to find your SMS contact field
  6. Choose the operator to use to evaluate data (equal to, contains, not null, etc.)
  7. Enter the value you're looking for in the field
  8. Click the Save and Next button to see your results


Creating a segment for all contacts subscribed to a keyword

No work on your part necessary on this one! Our system creates a segment for all subscribers per each keyword for you. On the Segment page, click open the SMS Segments folder (left) and look for segment names that begin with All Subscribers.




Managing SMS Contact Fields

The SMS contact record has 45 fields that you can use to store information for your imported SMS subscribers. To access & customize these fields, go to Settings > Data Setup > Custom Tables. On the Custom Tables page, search for SMS. Click the Edit button.
