Segmenting your SMS Contacts

Segmenting your SMS Contacts

Segments allow you to dynamically divide contacts into lists that you can send campaigns to. Using a clause builder, you can build criteria to target your campaigns to the most relevant contacts to ensure the highest possible engagement and you can create them in a few quick steps.

SMS segments can be created based on your SMS keyword(s), an additional piece of information collected through the opt-in process, click behavior, or data that was imported for your SMS contacts.

SMS Contact Fields

The SMS contact record has 45 fields that you can use to store information for your imported SMS subscribers. To access & customize these fields, go to Settings > SMS > Configure fields.

Creating a segment based on contact data

Get started by navigating to the Contacts dashboard. Then select Segments from the left menu. Use the toggle at the top of the page to flip the view to SMS segments:

Our first example uses information imported for SMS contact records and a customized SMS field Rewards Level.
  1. Click the Create SMS Segment button
  2. Enter a name for your segment then scroll to the Builder section
  3. Open the New Clause drop-down then scroll to find your SMS contact field
  4. Choose the operator to use to evaluate data (equal to, contains, not null, etc.)
  5. Enter the value you're looking for in the field
  6. Click the Save and Next button to see your results

Creating a segment based on behavior

Our system can track click activity of SMS campaign recipients (if your message includes a URL). And, if you're using our Clickstream integration, we can track page views & purchase activity from your website.

Our second example uses click behavior activity from a sent SMS campaign.
  1. Click the Create SMS Segment button
  2. Enter a name for your segment then scroll to the Builder section
  3. Open the New Clause drop-down then choose the SMS action (action clauses are at the top)
  4. Choose the SMS campaign from the Available Mailings column and push it to the Selected Mailings column
  5. Scroll to find the Links drop-down menu
  6. Open menu to select the link(s) to evaluate for activity (optional, you can leave it set to evaluate Any url)
  7. Click the Save and Next button to see your results
