Triggered Segments

What is a Triggered Segment

A Triggered Segment allows you to create automated messaging that sends when your contacts meet specific time-based criteria. For example, you can set up a Triggered Segment to identify contacts who purchased premium tickets to one of your events, and then configure a Triggered Mailing to send a thank-you message the morning after the event.

When to use Triggered Segment instead of Regular Segment

While Regular Segments are more commonly used, Triggered Segments are ideal for scenarios where you need a recurring email to automatically send to contacts based on time-based criteria. Some common use cases include:
  1. Anniversaries: Sending messages for birthdays, anniversaries, or other yearly events.
  2. Reminders: Sending reminders for upcoming shipments, events, or other date-based activities.
  3. Pre/Post-Event: Sending relevant information before an event or a survey after the event has occurred.

How to create a Triggered Segment

Creating a Triggered Segment is similar to creating a Regular Segment, with a few key differences:
  1. Identify the Trigger Date: Choose a date field that will act as the trigger event. This could be the date of your show, event, a contact’s birth date, or any other relevant date field.
  2. Create the Segment: Go to the Contacts dashboard, click on "Segments" in the left navigation menu, and then select "Create Segment." Be sure to toggle on the Triggered Segment option.
  3. Build Your Segment: The segment builder is divided into two parts—Trigger Event and Filter Criteria.
    1. Trigger Event: Select the date field you identified in the first step. You can choose any date field, as well as certain action fields like joining a category or the time since the last email was opened.
      1. Exact Date and Time: Use this option in most cases.
      2. Anniversary: Use this only for events that happen on the same date each year
    2. Filter Criteria: Add additional criteria to refine your segment further. For example, you might want to target contacts who have spent a certain amount or verify that a contact attended an event to avoid sending emails to those who canceled.
