Using the IN and NOT IN operators
When building segments, there may be times you want to evaluate a contact field against multiple possible values—especially for demographic or custom profile data. Instead of creating multiple "OR" statements, Delivra makes this process more efficient with IN and NOT IN operators.
These operators help you streamline segmentation logic:
Example Scenario
Let’s say you want to create a segment of contacts who are not located in Ohio, Indiana, or Kentucky. Instead of writing out three separate "State is not equal to" clauses, you can use the NOT IN operator to handle it all in one step.
How to Use IN and NOT IN Operators
Navigate to the Contacts dashboard and choose Segments from the left-hand menu.
-
Click the Create Email Segment button and select Regular Segment in the pop-up.
-
Provide a name and description for your segment.
-
Use the Select Field drop-down to locate the desired contact field (e.g., State).
-
In the pop-up:
Click OK when your list is complete.
-
Click Save and Test to see the segment results.
Best Practices and Tips
IN and NOT IN are supported for text and numeric fields only.
-
Click Download my data values in the segment builder to review existing data for the chosen field. This helps avoid typos or formatting mismatches.
-
Use these operators to check for membership across categories like geography, product interest, job title, or numeric ranges.
Practical Use Cases
Build segments that include only certain states or regions.
-
Exclude contacts with specific product interests for a targeted message.
-
Target multiple store locations or event registrations with a single clause.
If you're frequently working with long or changing lists of values, IN and NOT IN can be real time-savers—giving your segmentation wings!
