Using the Split Clause

Using the Split Clause

Sometimes you need to divide your contact list into equal parts to test different messages, subject lines, or timing strategies. Rather than manually separating your list, Delivra offers a Split Segment clause that automates this process with precision.

What Is the Split Segment Clause?

The Split clause allows you to divide a segment into equal parts — halves, thirds, quarters, and beyond. This is especially useful for A/B testing or multi-variant testing where you want each version of your campaign to be seen by a random, evenly distributed portion of your audience.

How to Use the Split Segment Clause

  1. Navigate to Contacts > Segments and create your segment.

  2. If you're looking to split your entire contact list, add a clause such as:

    • Email Address is Not Null
    • This includes all normal-status contacts in your account.
  3. Next, add a Split clause:

    • Click "Choose a Clause", then select Split.
    • A pop-up will appear prompting you to configure the split.
  4. In the pop-up:

    • Use the “Split contacts into” drop-down to select the number of groups (e.g., 2 for halves, 3 for thirds).
    • Use the “Take the” menu to choose which portion this segment will target (e.g., the first of 2).
  5. Save the segment and test to verify your results.

  6. To create additional split groups, simply copy your segment and adjust the "Take the" option to the appropriate group (e.g., second of 2, third of 3, etc.).

Practical Use Cases

  1. A/B Subject Line Testing
Use the Split Segment Clause to evenly divide a qualified contact list into two groups, each receiving a different subject line.
  2. Content Strategy Comparison
Send different email designs to split segments to measure which layout performs better.
  3. SMS vs. Email Pathways
Route one group into an SMS-first automation and another into an email-first workflow.

Best Practices and Tips

  • Always double-check segment sizes after saving to confirm contacts are evenly distributed.
  • Use naming conventions like “Split Test – Group 1 of 2” to keep your segments organized.
  • For fair testing, avoid applying other segment filters that could unevenly skew results after the split.
  • Consider using split segments for send time testing or comparing engagement across different content versions.

Important Notes

  • The Split clause is an enabled feature and may not be available in all accounts by default.
