Suppressing Contacts from Mailings

Suppressing Contacts from Mailings

In Delivra, there are several ways to suppress contacts—either manually or automatically—from receiving your mailings. These options help you manage communication frequency, maintain compliance, and protect your sender reputation, all while delivering a better experience to your audience.

There are five primary methods for suppressing contacts. Four apply to individual mailings or account settings, and one applies globally to prevent any marketing emails to certain contacts.

Suppression Options for Individual Mailings

When sending a campaign, you can suppress contacts using the following methods during the Contacts step of setup:

1. Suppress Contacts Who Received a Previous Mailing

Exclude recipients of a prior campaign to avoid overlapping messages or to target only those who haven’t yet received your content. This is commonly used when re-sending a mailing to easily exclude contacts who received the mailing the first time around.

2. Suppress a Segment or Tag

Prevent specific groups—defined by segments or tags—from receiving a mailing. This is often used to:

  • Avoid internal or competitor sends

  • Exclude high-value contacts from receiving your general messaging

  • Honor specific opt-out categories or preferences

3. Apply a Suppression List

Use pre-loaded suppression lists to consistently exclude external unsubscribes, do-not-contact records, or other pre-determined addresses.

4. Import as “Expired” Contacts

Importing contacts with an Expired status blocks them from receiving any marketing messages. Contacts in Expired status will not be included in any marketing emails sent from your account. Learn how to change your contacts' status in bulk by reading this article.

Note: Expired contacts may still receive transactional mailings.

Automatically Suppress via Sending Frequency Limits

5. Sending Frequency Limits

Delivra gives you the option to automatically suppress contacts based on how often they receive messages. This protects against over-messaging and helps reduce fatigue or unsubscribes.

You can configure limits to:

  • Allow only a certain number of emails per day, such as 2 mailings per day.

  • Allow only a certain number of emails for a time period, such as 3 mailings in a 5-day period.

Additionally, you can add exclusions to your send frequency limits to ensure all contacts receive your most important messaging. Exclusions are available for transactional mailings and mailings sent to specific segments or tags.

This automatic suppression method is perfect for managing high-volume sends, subscription-heavy programs, or sensitive audiences who may disengage with frequent messaging.

Best Practices for Suppression

  • Set clear goals for each campaign to determine if and how suppression is needed

  • Use sending limits proactively to prevent audience fatigue

  • Keep your suppression lists, segments, and rules up to date with your evolving communication strategy

  • Use “Expired” status for contacts who must be permanently excluded from marketing sends
